This poem is about seeking the way to Heaven. I thought of it after talking with someone who thought you get there by doing good. You can't earn eternal life..
Not by works but by grace. Romans 11:6.
Which Way To Heaven
-
Oh Sir can you tell me? Oh stop for a while,
Which way to Heaven, and how many mile?
Is the road easy, and is it downhill?
And will I get there if I just stand still?
-
I've been a good Husband, not battered my wife
I've helped lots of people, all of my life
I don't curse or swear, or spit in the street.
I don't punch folk, or kick, and I dress pretty neat.
-
And I always make sure I put brass in the tin,
Of the Salvation Army lass, oh yes, Hymns I can sing.
I've got no enemies, I'm right well liked.
And I've never nicked owt, or anyone's drink ever spiked.
-
I always stand up for folk on the bus,
And if ever I'm wronged, I never make a fuss.
So please can you show me the way I should take?
For Heaven's the place I surely must make.
-
Aye lad I'll tell thee. It's simple you see.
Just kneel down at the Cross of Calvery.
And there to the Saviour, your sins now confess.
You think you're clean but you're In a right mess.
-
Admit you're a sinner, and He died to set you free,
And you're grateful and thankful for His mercy.
And that you realise that you're no good,
Ask Him to cleanse you in His precious blood.
-
Open your hearts door and ask Him to come in,
He will, and He'll free you from your sin.
Then just believe that He is the one,
Sent by the Father His only flesh-born Son.
-
Now read God's word, at least once a day,
And don't forget your prayers to say.
Then tell others what Jesus did for you.
He's able do the same for them too.
